author Sip, Pick, and Pack...How Pollinators Help Plants Make Seeds
Charlevoix, Mi
Of 20,000 species of bees known world-wide less than 15 species produce honey. Many other species are excellent pollinators! 70% of the 20,000 species are not cavity nesters (like honey bees). About 14,000 species build their nests underground! Many of them are great pollinators too. Polly W Cheney has an undergraduate degree in English from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She is a Master Gardener Volunteer, a volunteer mediator for Northern Community Mediation in Petoskey, MI and a resident of Charlevoix County. Her book "Sip, Pick, and Pack...How Pollinators Help Plants Make Seeds" is like the tip of an ice berg as far as introducing children and parents to seed formation, pollination and pollinators, but it is beautiful and accurate in text and illustration. The book includes "Fun Facts" and "Glossary" pages. She hopes it will encourage children to recognize pollinators' importance in food production. Keeping NGSS in mind she will emphasize the necessity for bees to get a good rap!
